Usually they look quite sincere and have this willing-solve-everything-for-you face. Because apart from sincerity, they’ve got nothing to offer. They may be fresh graduates with impressive education background or new practitioners amazing job experience from other industries.
Unfortunately, they are still less than qualified because of a lack of time in doing profound research in the field or case accumulation in teaching, which means you will become one of their guinea pigs.
2. Scholars 学究
They are traditional, appropriate and harmless. You could spot their identity immediately from the crowd. They have heaps of “theories” to share with you without concrete ground. They have this capability in making easy things complicated and thereby seemingly superior.
Their seemingly high-end theories easily drive you nuts, make you feel inferior, and kneel you down. You are at his disposal when your worship for him starts. One thing to remember is, one makes a contribution by making complex things simplified, while the other leads a disaster by making easy things complicated.
They may look dashing and excel in making you laugh. Some are funny and born stage performers. However, a funny teacher is not necessarily a good teacher. A good teacher weaves moderate amount of jokes into his lesson to explain a complex theory, maintain students focus, or motivate students.
A clown weave moderate of teaching into his jokes to win applause from audience. Here, the percentage and content of the jokes are fairly important. I personally feel 1/3 is the maximum, the more relevant the better. You have to remind yourself, whether you come to this class for knowledge or entertainment.
4. Narcissists 自恋狂
Teaching is a job which builds your self-esteem easily. After the newbie phase, when a teacher has grasped some confidence and attracted some fans, he is apt to enjoy the worship of students so much that he really thinks he is the best. I’m not against showing some professional achievements to boost students’ confidence in a teacher.
However, building authority on the dead bodies of peers is another story. I’ve heard how a narcissistic bitch demeaned her colleagues nastily in front of her students when I was teaching next door and the classroom was not soundproof. This self-importance will limit her professional pursuit and development, not to mention her low moral standards.
5. Veterans 老兵
They have seen the world, done it all, have systematic, practical and established theories and methods. They know how to communicate with students effectively. They make few mistakes and don’t enjoy the worship of students that much anymore. You cannot really find fault in them. What’s wrong with experience?
However, some veterans are like an accurately functioning machine, a body with no soul, self-content or unmotivated，seek no progress or development anymore. While Cambridge 13 was in market, I’ve seen one use Cambridge 6 as his main teaching material.
